A Journey to Bath

On 3rd November 1965, a group of school friends took the train from Glastonbury to Evercreech and Bath. They had an official permit to visit the locomotive depots at Bath (Green Park) at 11.00am. and Bristol (Barrow Road) at 3.30pm. In between, they made a quick (unofficial) visit to Severn Tunnel Junction depot. It was dark by the time they arrived back at Bath, for the return journey to Evercreech and Glastonbury.

The schedule was:

Early morning departure from Glastonbury: 41291 waits to depart with the 07.30 to Evercreech Junction.... ...and by 07.56 is pausing at Evercreech Junction before continuing its journey to Templecombe. At 08.07, a stopping train from Bath arrives, on this occasion pulled bt B.R. standard class 4 2-6-0 no.76011.
Just after 8 o'clock, 41307 arrives from Templecombe with the empty stock for the 08.15 to Highbridge... ... and reverses into the centre road, between the two platform roads, to allow the main line trains to pass.

09.28: standard class 4 2-6-4T no.80039 arrives from Bath... ...and takes on water before continuing to Bournemouth.
 
At 09.30 the Bath train leaves Evercreech hoauled by Ivatt class 2 2-6-2T n.41216, and is here plodding up the 1 in 50 onto the Mendip Hills.   Journey's end: 41216 after its 10.46 arrival at Bath (Green Park). Total journey time from Glastonbury: 3 hours 16 minutes!

 
Inside the shed, an unidentified standard 2-6-4T awaits attention in the smoke and sunlight.   LMS 'Jinty' 0-6-0T no. 47276, shunts in the goods yard.
 
One of Bath's Stanier 8F 2-8-0s, no.48760, is readied for its next freight turn.   Another objective for the day was a visit to Bristol (Barrow Road) shed. G.W.R. 2-8-0 no.3836 simmers in the shed yard.

In the other platform is 41291, which arrived at 20.09 with the 19.10 from Highbridge.
