Schiehallion & Lochnagar, May 1995

5/5/95; Schiehallion (1083m)

The walk over Schiehallion started at Braes of Foss, to the northeast of the hill. From the summit, we continued to the northwest, through Kinloch Rannoch, to find refreshment and rejoin the cars at Laganaisgair cottages on the banks of Loch Rannoch.

6/5/95; Lochnagar (1155m) & the White Mounth (1118m)

The walk started from the end of the loch at Spittal of Glenmuick, and up onto the Lochnagar plateau via Cuidhe Crom (1083m), Cac Carn Mor (1150m), and Cac Carn Beag (1155m). Then on to the west over The Stuic (1093m), the White Mounth (1110m), Carn an t-Saigart Beag, Carn an t-Saigart Mor (1047m), Fafernie (1000m), Cairn Bannoch (1012m), Cairn of Gowal (983m), and Broad Cairn (998m). From here we descended the Moulzie stream to Glen Doll youth hostel.

We had arranged to meet Robert at Glen Doll; he was cycling in from Aucherarder, with wine for our evening meal. We prepared the meal with food procured at the hostel, and it went down very well after a long day in the hills!

7/5/95; Jock's Road to Braemar;
Driesh (947m); Mayar (928m), Tom Buidhe (957m), Crow Cragies (920m),Tolmount (958m)

The day started with a game of squash in the Glen Doll squash court, before setting off on the walk back to Braemar via Jock's Road and its adjoining peaks. Robert and his friend joined us for the hills, then returned to Glen Doll.

The morning was damp, but the walk up the river through the woods was pleasant until we reached cloud level. After a damp visit to the summits of Driesh and Mayar, we continued at high level to Tom Buidhe, Crow Cragies, and Tolmount, before rejoining Jock's Road for the long walk out to Braemar.

The following day, the weather worsened to the extent that we cut our losses and returned home early.

Matterhorn, August 1995

11/8/95; Matterhorn (4478m)

Following a series of attempts since 1989, some of our group finally made it to the summit of the Matterhorn in 1995. Conditions on the ascent were poor and only two other climbers made it to the top, although there was the usual congestion at the Moseley Slabs. The cloud parted briefly on the summit, but the stay was short as turbulent clouds could be seen rising rapidly up the valleys.

On the preceding days, training outings were made from the Refuge du Couvercle to the Aigille Verte and the Agille de Talefre.
